The Village
Beden is part of a village, but not an ordinary country village; with only 18 houses in total, it is spread out over 2 and a half miles, with no discernible centre. Most of it’s houses are tucked away down drives or behind old granite walls and you’d be forgiven for not realising you were in a village at all, as you drive through it. The picturesque church of St Mary’s is it’s only meeting point and though, like in so many churches now, the Sunday service is not a busy affair, the villagers gather here on special occasions to raise money for the church and catch up.
The village people are a varied mix, ranging from pure bred Devon farming folk and retired nature lovers, to fresh incomers and city escapees. What everyone has in common is a great love of this lesser known part of Dartmoor; it’s peace and it’s untouched beauty.
Here at Beden, preserving the nature on our part of land and respecting the peace and quiet of the village is high on our agenda. We ask everyone to familiarise themselves with our boundaries, so as not to unwittingly wander on to neighbouring land, keep dogs on leads and drive slowly through the village.
